Introduction to the poet Robert Burns (1759 – 1796) was a Scottish poet and lyricist. He is widely regarded as the national poet of Scotland and is celebrated worldwide. He is the best known of the poets who have written in the Scots language. He also wrote in standard English. About the poem This poem is a lyrical ballad that describes the speaker’s deep love for his beloved and promises that his love will last longer than human life.  The beloved of the speaker is as beautiful as the red rose and as sweet as the music. With the help of literary devices, the poet has sketched a very vivid and realistic picture of his profound love for his beloved. Themes In ‘All the world’s a stage’ Shakespeare discusses the futility of humanity’s place in the world. He explores themes of time, aging, memory, and the purpose of life. Through the poem’s central conceit, that everyone is simply a player in a larger game that they have no control over, he brings the themes together.
