An Astrologer's Day' is a thriller, suspense story describing a day in the life of an astrologer who makes his living by selling cosmic insights to gullible villagers, though he has no knowledge of the cosmos or actual spiritual insight

The Astrologer

The unnamed astrologer is the main character in the story "An Astrologer's Day" by R.K. Narayan. He had a past tragic life during his teenage. He thought he had the blood of a man on his hands all these years. That was the reason why he ran away from home, did the job of an astrologer (although he did not have any knowledge about the cosmic insight) settled in the city, and married. He gets dressed up as an astrologer with a distinctive turban that helped him to get customers. It gave him a good-looking appearance. He had a working analysis of mankind’s troubles: marriage, money, and the tangles of human ties. Long practice had sharpened his perception. But, a day in his life turns out to be important that the man whom he thought had murdered (Guru Nayak), was still alive. He feels great relief from that day. 

Guru Nayak

An ordinary man, Guru Nayak is the chief client of the story, who had a bad sufferings in his past. He was severely attacked by a knife and left to die in a well. fortunately, a dwell-passed by and rescued him. from that day, he had a sense of revenge and was looking for the man who caused his severe injury.  At the last scene of the story, he goes to the astrologer and asks some questions he had in his mind and the astrologer replies the answer. He becomes so happy to know that the person has been killed in an accident. But, he does not know that astrologer was the person he was looking for. 

The Astrologer's Wife

She has got a small role in the story. She seems to be a good housewife, who listens to her husband and fulfills her family duty. There is not much description about her, however, her behaviors show that she is an innocent and humble person. She does not react awkwardly even after her husband tells his past.

Narration

The narrator has narrated about the life of an astrologer, setting and his business. Only by the narrator, the readers know about the accident that took place in the past life of an astrologer.
